savagepuffin It is a lovely translation/interpretation of a classic, powerful poem and the reading is evocative and powerful as well, both in Old Irish and Modern English. I love that she makes this beautiful, ancient poetry accessible for those of us who don't speak Old Irish.

about

This is my performance of the original Middle Irish and my English translation of The Song of Amergin. The piece appears in Lebor Gabála Érenn/The book of the Invasions of Ireland, a corpus of mythic prose and poetic narratives describing a series of invasions by human and supernatural inhabitants over several centuries. The book appears to have been recorded in the 11th C CE, and its text is in Middle Irish.

In the story, The Tuatha Dé Danann or “divine tribes of Danu” are followed by the Milesians, human settlers from the continent. Amergin Glúingel (Song-born White-knee), one of the Milesians, was a great poet. His wife Scéne died on the journey, and thus he was grieving as they attempted to land. Nine waves prevented their landing, and many other people were lost as they attempted to take the shore. Finally Amergin placed his foot on shore and spoke his poem, thus taking control of the land via magical verse.
